It ’s been 2.5 months, with 4500miles, 3 shop visits and I’ve just now established the core limp mode issue. The turbo is toast thanks to a worn wastegate. Sidenote, the alternator is on the fritz as of the last 600 miles.
These 2 photos show the valve in 2 postions but in both photos the actuator has not moved, this is not good.
still really enjoy the car, hence putting tons of miles on it but its averages $700 a month not including gas or the impending turbo.

So what’s the plan...? Fix it? Sell it?

Swap a Tritec into it :D
Idk how Mini messed up so bad going to the 2nd and 3rd gen cars. A friend just lost all his oil on his 2013 S with 60k miles. And here I am with 206k and 1qt burned every 2500 miles.

Its financed, so the plan is to keep fixing it and pay it off quicker if it ever gives my wallet a chance to breath

Im burning close to a quart every 800 miles, I want to swap in a turbo’d prelude H22 but that would end up co$t ing.

What's the normal burn rate for those motors? I know 5th gen GTI TFSI motors can burn 1qt every 1000 miles and its normal for them.

New candidate for worst Oppo car?

What I was reading is that checking the oil every time you get fuel is recommended, which equates to 300-350 miles. I think 800 is within spec, but its disheartening.

I want to replace it with a Ja guar XK so that could take this ones crown when the time comes

I think I’ve added at least a quart between 5000 mile changes on all my MINIs.
Also my 2013 GTI wastegate g renaded the turbo at about 50k - I just barely got in on power train warranty

Dare I ask how much fixing t

Ooh shiiyt

Wtf. I would have never expected such high oil consumption to be normal. TIL.

Which Oppo has the least reliable daily, me with my Mk3, Sony’s JCW, or NKato’s CVPI?
![]() 03/31/2019 at 14:45 |

$1300 for a new turbo iirc
![]() 03/31/2019 at 14:46 |

Well, NKato drove his car into a trailer so he has a bit of a head start.
![]() 03/31/2019 at 15:17 |

...What? When did that happen?
I’m more shocked at the number of problems he has with it. I thought CVPIs were supposed to be reliable.

I can do all the work myself, $1300 for a good turbo, closer to $700 for rebuilt, and least of all a China turbo for $400. It may work to buy the super cheap turbo and scavenge the exhaust housing that has the wastegate flap
![]() 03/31/2019 at 16:21 |

I think NKatos has cost the most so far
![]() 03/31/2019 at 16:33 |

At least you can do the work yourself to save some money!

Well, yeah, but he pays people to work on his. I haven’t touched my spreadsheet in a while, but I’m floating juuuust under 4k I think since June, not counting gas or tools.

You ever feel like a reliable car is just waiting to kill your wallet? My wife's Cooper s gave me that feeling once. I sold it a week later.

Cop cars are ran hard and hung up wet. The secret is to buy a Citizen Patrol CVPI

I keep trying to warn oppos and they keep telling me that no, the jcws are made better no get a post 2012 ect. About the same experience I had with mine. Wait until you break a sunvisor mirror cover.

Just ran the numbers on the sc400 and it’s at $ 8886.94 since July, or 7536.94 if you subtract the vehicle cost. I wish I hadn't kept track.

My mini was a qt every 600 miles.

Jcw’s only saving grace is the handling and looks.
Driverside visor was already broken, passenger side broke off when a passenger opened it. I witnessed it break in real time. Also hit a rough pothole and some roof trim straight fell off.

Wise choice on your part

The major problem I had was the thermostat housing cracked, puked all my coolant all at once on the highway, almost toasted the motor. Yet another "common" problem. Also the hood release latch inside the car kept breaking

Holy batman!

Yes. Would have been about $3500 I think. Oddly the car ran completely fine except no boost so it was a NA 2.0 GTI for a couple weeks.

Yeah, but that's a project car. They're supposed to be money pits.
